I am not interested to become a nurse because I can't stand the sight of blood, vomitus and body wastes. Nursing is said to be a noble job because helping those who are ill and in distress is certainly not a mechanical task. You need to give more of yourself in the nursing proceedure. You need to be honest, compassionate and knowledgeable. It is a very demanding job either physically or mentally.

Those who have embraced this profession need to be encouraged for they risk to be infected by AIDS VIRUS and other deadly diseases. Morever, they have to perform night shift and be on call during cyclonic conditions or any other calamities that may strike the country.

Nurses have to be knowledgeable and do their job without commiting medical/nursing errors. It is also appreciated that a Nurse communicates well and be very comprehensive when dealing with patients.

wink A good and professionnal Nurse is blessed a thousand times.

A very noble profession indeed!
It is a pity that our mauritian nurses are not paid as they deserve.
A doctor get a better pay for a few minutes attention given to a patient while a nurse who attend to that patient for many hours, clean him/her, give the moral support etc. is rarely given the credit for the good job.

Have you notice that when a patient leave the hospital or a clinic, he/she thanks the doctor but very rarely the nurse?  This is, I think because the doctor is seen as a knowledgeable specialist but the nurse only a mere domestic excuting blindly the orders of the specialist. There is no justice in that society! cry

I have seen many newly qualified doctors seeking the help or advice of well experienced nurses before prescribing treatment. Our mauritian general nurses have had a challenging 3 year training before qualification. Let's study below a detailed nursing curriculum:

1. Nursing- introduces the role of provider of nursing care, with a focus on promotion of health and normative aging in individuals in residential and community care. Topics include assessment of the biopsychosocial and spiritual needs of the client, physical examination skills and therapeutic nursing interventions, nursing care plans, and medication administration and documentation.
2. Anatomy and physiology:Topics include pathophysiology of disease, therapeutic nursing interventions with acute manifestations of diseases in major organ systems (cardiac, pulmonary, endocrine, gastrointestinal, neuro and musculoskeletal), fluid/electrolyte balances, perioperative care, health promotion and prevention in chronic disease.
3. Pharmacology: Drugs and its administration
4. Mental health: Topics include psychiatric illnesses (depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress syndrome), therapeutic interventions and communication skills, psychotropic medications, coping, crisis intervention and special populations (children with attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
5. Nursing Practice: Nursing practice in an advanced clinical setting, treatment centre or community health centre requires that nurses be prepared to make decisions and carry out appropriate treatment or make referral, and be able to provide emergency care and support for critically ill clients and families. Student nurses have to work under the supervision of a senior Nursing Officer or Charge Nurse in different wards.
6. Microbiology and pathophysiology
7. Specialised Nursing Care: Ear, Nose and Throat, Burns, Radiotherapy, Intensive Care, Cardiology ..
8. Community Health Care: Topics include family-centered care, culture, community and health care systems, vulnerable populations in the community (elders and the developmentally disabled), public health and community health issues (alcoholism, communicable diseases, domestic violence, sexual abuse and suicide) and epidemiology.

Nursing students who are following a course of four years leading to the degree of BNurs. The BNurs curriculum is as follows:

Year 1: Health, Nursing, Nursing Skill, Communication, Behavioural Sciences, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Nursing Practicum.

Year 2: Nursing, Clinical Pharmacology, Nursing Skills, Mental Health, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathophysiology, General Pharmacology, Microbiology, Nursing Practicum.

Year 3: Nursing, Clinical Pharmacology, Nursing Skills, Behavioural Sciences, Current Issues in Health Care, Nursing Practicum.

Year 4: Nursing, Clinical Pharmacology, Mental Nursing, Nursing Skill, Nursing Research, Nursing Elective, Nursing Practicum, Research Project.

Yes, they deserve a good pay and they need to be encouraged by the public to give the best of care at ward level. They also have the important role of a medical counsellor to prevent illness and to promote healthy life style. Nursing continuing education courses will surely help our Nurses to acquire new skills and to have an increase in salary.

Yesterday a Nurse has been violently injured by a mentally ill patient at Brown Sequard Mental Health Care Centre. If you are not tactful and alert, you can easily become one of their victims. These patients have got rights but you have limited rights. Psychiatric patients are unpredictible and they have little tolerance to your weaknesses.

I have read that Canada is seeking registered Nurses as immigrants and is ready to provide all facilities to make immigration easy and without tears. I quote " The Canadian province of Alberta has announced an Immigrant Access Fund (IAF) to provide loans of up to $5,000 CAD to foreign-trained immigrants to assist them with relocation costs. This includes helping immigrants to have their overseas qualifications assessed for the local market. $740,000 CAD will be available for the program, which is intended to help with foreign tuition, living and travel expenses, qualification assessments, and professional association fees."
